Losing the balance of key items in an ecosystem could leads to unsuitability and causes several challenges not only for natural resources but also for plants and animals species. Unfortunately in recent decades, this phenomenon has been occurred at many parts of the world, such as different regions in Iran, and in the case that serious movement for changing the approaches and trying for rebalancing doesn’t occur; humanity will face a wide range of environmental, social and economic challenges.

In this regard, “Toran” and “Miandasht” regions which are the two important national parks in Iran, has been faced unsuitability. It should be considered that these two regions are the habitat of Asian cheetah and some other rare species therefore rebalancing approaches become more important. To achieving this goal professionally and in a participatory approach, Abangah group due to its experiences, were selected on December 2016 as the consultant of related international project by “Conservation of Asiatic Cheetah Project Office”, UNDP and “Iranian Department of the Environment “.

The project was aimed to open a new window and draw a new horizon for approaching Environmental Sustainability based on capacity building and involving local communities so all steps were defined based on actor analyzing map and the local society’s representatives also environmental NGOs were involved in all processes.

To guarantee the results, at the beginning of the project a comprehensive instruction for activities was approved and base on that, in each regions, a headquarter consist of the representatives of related governmental organizations also NGOs was formed.

The main headquarters missions were:

  • Census and license control of herds
  • Prevent the entry of unauthorized and over permitted herds
  • Animal disease control and vaccination
  • Control the number of dog’s herd
  • Prepare a data bank
  • Partnership with ranchers on founding solutions for reducing conflicts

The census and data collections were followed through a standard questionnaires and surveys which were done by regular patrol guards at the both regions and during that, in the case of observation of any kind of violation; the offender was introduced to the court. The analyzing of the data developed a unique picture of the real status of the both regions in different aspects.

As the results shows, based on headquarters positive interactions with ranchers and local societies, a suitable coordination was established and the goal of approaching sustainable manner and balanced pasture management was under respected by all.

The project processes and outcomes which all are mentioned at project comprehensive report (in 5 chapters and more than 100 pages) present a successful model which could be promoted systematically at other regions especially at Asian cheetah habitats at Iran so that a global good practice for sustainable environment conservation base on communities’ and stakeholders’ participation will be provided as what are followed by Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
